On this page, I have created several sewing samples for you to learn more about your machine and several applications that you will find this week.  These are completely optional, but are a great way to expand your sewing knowledge.

Sewing Knit Fabrics (Optional Sample)

Before you sew your hoodie, it is best to explore the stitch options on your machine for sewing knits.  If you are new to sewing knits and/or want to explore the capabilities of your machine, I will guide you in creating samples sewing knits with your machine.  First you will see how a straight stitch works with your hoodie fabric.  Then you will do a narrow zigzag or wobble stitch.  Finally, you will explore all of the stretch stitch options on your machine.  To following along with this sample, you will need the following:

  • 4 – 8″X3″ pieces of your hoodie knit fabric
  • 2 – 8″X6″ pieces of your hoodie fabric

Follow these videos to explore your machine.  There is an extra video on hemming knits and using a double needle.

Darts

Your hoodie has a single point dart.  If you have never sewn a dart and/or would like to sample one, please follow the directions below.

Darts create shaping in garments.  They are:

  • Used to create shape in a garment and allow for the body’s curves
  • Sewn from wide to narrow
  • Directed toward the body’s curve

Your hoodie has a dart from the neck to the shoulder to create shape and ease for your shoulder.

If you have not sewn darts or would like some practice, you may complete this optional dart sample.  In order to do so, please complete the following steps:

  1. Print out this dart pattern
  2. Cut 1 of the patterns out in a woven fabric.
  3. Watch the tutorial video
